Three times between 1992 and 1998 he rode one of the world’s most overpowering serves all the way to Wimbledon finals only to come up tantalizingly short of the title. Then, in 2001, with a suspect shoulder and ranking outside the world’s Top 100, he needed a wildcard just to walk onto the grounds at the All-England Club. He got his wildcard entry into the event and – after a thrilling five-set final victory against Patrick Rafter – he exited a Wimbledon Champion.
